CDU at 50
August 22, 2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. In 1966, CDU was founded out of the ashes of the Watts revolt with a clear mission—to address the inadequate access to healthcare in the community of Watts and greater South Los Angeles. You can help us honor our history and shed light on an emerging bright future.
To celebrate, CDU has hosted events throughout the year. Jazz at Drew is a landmark event returning for the anniversary by popular demand.
The Next 50 Years
Today, we set our sights high and continue on our path forward to provide a quality education for students seeking careers in the health sciences. We aim to be recognized as the University of choice for students and faculty who are committed to excellence in changing the face and health status of disadvantaged and underserved communities throughout the world. As California and the nation continue to implement health care reform, we will maintain our vital role in training diversified health care teams to meet complex health care needs of those who need it most throughout the state.
The student experience will continue to be a top priority and endowing student scholarships is of highest importance. We are committed to making high-quality health care education available not just to the privileged few, but to the talented many.
World Class Facilities
Facilities are also crucial to the student experience. A new Student Health Center, with additional outpatient care and teaching, and increased student teaching laboratory and classroom space, will enhance the ability for students to learn and train onsite and, in turn, contribute back to our community.
